Sew It, Wear It, Sell It: Your Path from Creative Hobby to Profitable Passion

Welcome to Sew It, Wear It, Sell It: Let’s Turn Your Sewing Skills into Style and Income

I am new to the art of blogging, and I am jumping in cold. A friend of mine is always saying, I am jumping into the deep. I couldn’t jump into the deep with her whether it is swimming, I can’t swim or cooking, I am a mediocre cook who binge watch cooking channels for tips, or gardening I am still learning but I am happy when I pick a tomato, take a lot of pictures and send them to family and friends. However, there is one thing I know and can jump into the deep and that is SEWING.

I have taken so much inspiration from reading other bloggers, and I told myself to get up and get started. I recently retired and I am ready to talk about sewing and how you can either sew and wear it, or sew and sell it.
“Have you ever dreamed of sewing beautiful things you can wear, use, and even sell? Whether you want to create for yourself, your home, or a future business, you’re in the right place. Let’s turn your love of sewing into something stylish — and successful!”

Promise:
“This blog will take you from your first stitches to your first sale. You’ll learn how to sew with confidence, add your personal style, and turn your handmade creations into a profitable business. If you’ve ever wondered, ‘Can I really make money sewing?’ — the answer is YES, and I’ll show you how.””

About Me

Hi, I’m Janet Marlene! Welcome to Sew It, Wear It, Sell It — a place where creativity, passion, and entrepreneurship meet.

I was born and raised in Jamaica, where my love for sewing began at a young age, watching my mother create beautiful garments. That early spark stayed with me, guiding me through school and eventually across continents. After moving to the United States, I pursued my passion, studying fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where I honed my design skills and learned the ins and outs of the fashion world.

My career journey has been as colorful as it has been rewarding. I started as a Project Manager in the garment industry, even traveling to Korea to ensure international production met the highest standards. In 1992, I embraced entrepreneurship and opened Marlene Bridal and Party Center, where I designed and sold custom wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and prom dresses for over a decade.

After closing my boutique, I dedicated 17½ years to supporting families and children as a Case Planner in Foster Care, while also earning a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Baruch College. This blend of creativity, business experience, and understanding people has shaped the way I approach sewing, design, and teaching today.

I have retired as of December 31, 2024, I’m thrilled to return to my creative roots. Through my online store Symmar Design Studio and this blog, I aim to share my love for sewing, teach practical skills, and inspire others to turn their passion into profit. Whether you’re

here to learn, create, or start selling your own handmade designs, you’ve come to the right place!

Let’s sew, wear, and sell it together.
